How do you compare bank bonuses?
The biggest headline bonus is not always the best deal. Compare what you have to deposit, how long the money is tied up, the steps required to qualify, and what you give up by moving the cash.
Start with the qualification rules
Check the required deposit, direct-deposit or transaction conditions, deadlines, account type, and any restrictions on prior customers.
Look at the cash commitment
A larger bonus may require a much larger balance. Compare the bonus with what that same money could earn elsewhere during the qualification period.
Subtract fees
Monthly account fees or other charges can reduce the real value of an offer, especially when the bonus is modest or takes a long time to pay.
Check payout timing
Some offers require you to keep the account open or maintain qualifying activity before the bonus is paid. The timing affects both convenience and return.
Count the operational work
Changing direct deposit, moving automatic payments, tracking deadlines, and maintaining extra accounts all have a practical cost.
Compare net value, not marketing value
The useful question is what you are likely to keep after fees, lost interest, and effort—not just the advertised bonus amount.
